A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. An anxiety disorder causes one to be filled with fearfulness and uncertainty. Anxiety disorders can last at least 6 months and can get worse if they are not treated. Anxiety disorders commonly occur along with other mental or physical illnesses, including alcohol or substance abuse. Substance abuse refers to the overindulgence in and dependence on a chemical substance leading to effects that are detrimental to ones physical health or mental health, or the welfare of others. Severe stress, self-defeating behaviors, and oppositional behavior can occur as a result of other illnesses or disorders going untreated. Experiencing any of these illnesses or disorders can be very problematic in living a safe and healthy lifestyle.
